PHA vs. AHA vs. BHA Toner Pads: What’s the Difference?
Share
PHA, AHA, and BHA are often grouped together because they are exfoliating acids, but they are not identical. A combined formula can use more than one type to create a balanced cosmetic exfoliation step.
What is PHA?
Polyhydroxy acids such as gluconolactone are used for surface exfoliation and are often selected for formulas designed to feel gentler than some traditional acids.
What is AHA?
Alpha hydroxy acids such as lactic acid are water-soluble exfoliants commonly used to improve the look and feel of surface texture and dullness.
What is BHA?
Beta hydroxy acid commonly refers to salicylic acid in skincare. It is frequently used in products aimed at oily or congested-looking skin.
Why combine them?
EpiClear uses 3.0% gluconolactone, 1.2% lactic acid, and 0.5% salicylic acid, plus 4.0% niacinamide. The goal is a convenient multi-acid pad rather than forcing you to layer several separate exfoliants.
Avoid stacking too much
If you already use retinoids, stronger acids, or scrubs, introduce toner pads thoughtfully instead of combining every active in one routine.
Frequently asked questions
Is PHA the same as AHA?
No. They are different acid families.
Does EpiClear contain all three?
Yes: PHA, AHA, and BHA.
Should I use another acid serum on the same night?
You may not need to. Avoid unnecessary over-exfoliation.
